Sumner Township is situated on the central/southwestern border of Gratiot County. Its main communities are Sumner, located on the Pine River, and Elm Hall. Agricultural production of dry beans and corn is the main feature of the area. The Township was named for Charles Sumner, the first pioneer to the area, arriving in 1855.
